Friends of Earlham Cemetery aims to protect, conserve and enhance Earlham Cemetery for wildlife and as a place of freedom, recreation and enjoyment for the long-term benefit of all sections of the local community and other visitors. 

Our Walks in Earlham Cemetery

We hold regular walks in Earlham Cemetery.. These are open to all. They take approximately one and a half hours and explore the wildlife and history of the cemetery. We meet at Earlham Road gates (by the Cemetery Office). Please be aware that dogs (other than guide dogs) are not allowed in Earlham Cemetery.

Sun 4th January 2026 (10am) New Year Plant Hunt. As part of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland’s New Year Plant Hunt, how many flowers can we find in bloom? 

Sat 24th January 2026 (9am) Big Garden Bird Watch. What birds can we find in the cemetery? – The RSPB bird watch with our local expert.

Sun 15th February 2026 (10am) Cemetery History walk (part 1): ‘How the Cemetery developed’. Our local expert walks us through the history of the cemetery from its beginning in 1856 to the present.

Sat 21st March 2026 (10am) Lichen walk: Over 50 species are recorded here having the benefit of a variety of stone and trees to find a habitat. Lichens are organisms which are a symbiotic association between fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria. Discover another world.

Sat 12th April 2026 (10am)  Trees: Come and admire the fine collection of over 80 species of trees.

Sat 2nd May 2026 (10am)  Spring flowers: There is an extensive list of flowers for the cemetery. What can you find?

Other Walks in Earlham Cemetery

“Graves with Tales to Tell”, led by Sandi R-Urquhart, can be arranged for groups of up to 12 people. The tour will look at some unusual headstones and tell the stories of some of the people buried in Earlham Cemetery and the circumstances of their deaths.  Contact Sandi for more details (sandiru275@gmail.com).

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission holds tours of war graves in Earlham Cemetery.  Visit the CWGC website for more details – listed as “Norwich City Cemetery (Earlham Road)”.
